apart-ment, 2020

Created out of a reaction to isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, apart-ment was put together using footage from indoor and outdoor space, shot a few months ago, well before COVID-19 came into our collective consciousness. The word apartment originates from the Italian word “appartare” meaning to separate. For those of us who have the opportunity “to separate,” the apartment can begin to feel like a box, whose every inch of interior space can’t be left untouched. When our safe spaces are measured in square feet, it becomes more tempting to quantify our outdoor spaces by measurements of volume and minutes ticked on a clock. apart-ment seeks to play with the blurred boundaries of time, and our perceptions of the comfort/discomfort with interior and exterior space.

apart-ment was included in the Abstract/Experimental program of the 2020 Supernova Festival in Denver.
